"Indeed, whether the respondents' own parents used corporal punishment made a big difference in their views about the legality of spanking. . . Peterson has justified his behavior by saying he believes he is successful because of the way his parents disciplined him. However, there is overwhelming evidence that physical punishment is both ineffective and harmful to child development."

My Paraphrase of Original Source
Samakow points out that as is with most situations, people are basing their opinions about whether or not spanking should be legal on how they were raised. Adrian Peterson attributes his achievements to being a product of tough love, and is reciprocating that onto his children. The reason why spanking is so controversial is because of the adverse effects that it has on children.
My Summary of the Original Source
Even though spanking is damaging to children's well-being, people who were spanked often use themselves as proof that it is an effective form of punishment when it is, in fact, the complete opposite.
